Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) vs. Osteoarthritis
A brief summary, and what you can do to support your body.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease where the body’s own immune system attacks the body’s joints. It can begin any time in life, it can occur within a few weeks or months. Joints are painful, swollen and stiff. RA usually affects small and large joints, symmetrically on both sides of the body. Morning joint stiffness is usually longer than 1 hour, and RA can give you a general feeling of fatigue. Osteoarthritis is caused mostly by wear and tear on the joints. Osteoarthritis traditionally begins later in life, it’s slow to progress. Joints ache, but have little to no swelling. Symptoms often begin on one side and can spread to other joints. Both of these conditions might benefit from working with a physical therapist, occupational therapist, doctors and possibly a physical trainer. |
